May 3 is World Press Freedom Day to raise awareness of the importance of an unhindered press to a just society.
It also confers the Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize in memory of the Columbian journalist who was assassinated in front of the offices of his newspaper, El Espectador, in 1986 after offending Columbia’s powerful drug barons.
Dawit Isaak won the 2017 Guillermo Cano Prize. Isaak is an Eritrean-Swedish journalist and playwright who has been held prisoner in Eritrea since 2001 without trial. Amnesty International considers him a prisoner of conscience and has called for his immediate and unconditional release.
