February 16, 2018 is Chinese New Year. Calculated by the second new moon after the winter solstice, it will fall sometime between January 21 and February 20. This year is the Year of the Dog. Traditionally, people put red papers with couplets or sayings on them on either side of the door and above the door. This dates back 4000 years when a wise man told them that these symbols would drive away evil spirits. It also looks like the blood of the passover, and some suggest a connection between the two.
