On February 26 1616, Galileo Galilei was formally banned by the Roman Catholic Church for teaching or defending the view that the Earth obits the sun.
Interestingly enough, this was also the date of the 2017 annular solar eclipse. An annular eclipse happens when the Moon covers the Sun’s center, leaving the Sun’s visible outer edges to form a “ring of fire” or annulus around the Moon.

It was lifted by the Roman church in the 19th century.
