May 9 is Europe Day for various reasons. First it is the anniversary of Schuman Declaration of 1950 which placed French and German production of coal and steel under one common High Authority open to all western European countries.
This organization paved the way for the European Economic Community and later the European Union.
May 9 is also celebrated throughout Europe as Victory Day commemorating the surrender of the Nazis in 1945.
