Independence Day in Seychelles

June 29 is Independence Day in the Republic of Seychelles commemorating the day in 1976 when it gained independence from Britain remaining a republic in the Commonwealth. It was originally settled by the French, hence its name and much of its cultural identity. It was peaceable ceded to the British in 1794.

The island nation of Seychelles is about 1000 miles east of Kenya in the Indian Ocean. It is composed of 162 islands, the majority of which are uninhabited, with many dedicated as nature reserves.
