Again I’m unsure whether to put World Mosquito Day in my Holiday Calendar or my Atrocity Calendar. On 20 August, 1897 Indian doctor Sir Ronald Ross discovered that female mosquitoes transmit malaria between humans.
According to WHO, over 400,000 people died from malaria in 2018, mostly children under five years of age, with 90 per cent of malaria cases occurring in Sub-Saharan Africa. The use of insecticide-treated bed-nets can reduce malaria illness by 50%, yet fewer than 5 per cent of African children sleep under a net.
Rotatian Malaria Partners are a group of Rotarians and leaders of NGOs dedicated to the global elimination of malaria. Remember it was the Rotary that dedicated itself to the elimination of polio 30 years ago and has been 99.9% successful.
RMP supports the distribution of insecticide-treated bed-nets in Uganda, Peru, Uganda, and Zambia. Read more about their amazing work here.
